AutoMedia publishes their top gas mileage vehicles ranking divided into five different categories. Among the winners, we have BMW’s MINI Cooper with a manual gearbox, and as a runner-up in the entry-level sedan segment, the BMW 335d receives a mention.
In the hybrid category, Toyota’s Prius tops the frugality list with an estimate of 51 mpg in city driving and 48 mpg on the highway. It is followed by the Lexus CT 200h, 43-mpg city/40-mpg highway, the new Honda Civic Hybrid sedan and the new CR-Z two-seat coupe. Both earn estimates of 40-mpg city/43-mpg highway.
Not surprisingly, Ford gets a mention as well with the new Fusion model. Other hybrids that made the list come from Hyundai (Sonata Hybrid – 35-mpg city/40-mpg highway), Lexus HS 250h and Toyota Camry Hybrid.
In the SUV segment, top rated hybrids are Ford Escape Hybrid (32mpg combined) and the Lexus RX 450h(30mpg).
Hyundai Elantra sits at the top of the subcompact class with a 29/40 mpg. Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Fiesta SFE and Fiat 500 are also being mentioned. Next in line, at 32 mpg combined (29-mpg city/37-mpg highway) is the MINI Cooper from BMW, with a manual gearbox. With automatic, the Mini gets a 28/36-mpg estimate.
BMW’s 335d model gets a 23/36 mpg estimate, 27 mpg combined. The X5d does not get a mention, even though we believe is one of the most fuel efficient sporty premium SUVs on the market.
Till 2013, the year many automakers will launch several electric vehicles, we anticipate that the MPG tops will continue to be dominated by hybrids, and from time to time, a smaller diesel engine will sneak in.
