One Lap of America 2010: Day 3 at Mid America Motorplex

Post by bimmermania »

So far, so good for the BMW Performance Driving School team of Mike Renner, Tom Lappin and Steve Maguire in the stock BMW X6 M. We’ve already seen a strong showing by the X6 M at  the Tire Rack Facility and Road America and it seems that the X6 M is doing a great job keeping pace just behind the Ferraris and Porsches. Check out Steve’s review of the day at Mid America Motorplex below!

After a few hours sleep it was time to grab a quick breakfast and get back on the road for the 30 mile trip to Mid America Mototplex (MAM), near Council Bluffs, IA.

This 15 turn 2.23 mile track is located next to I-29 and surrounded by corn fields and has hardly any elevation changes.

Upon arrival, Mike took off to walk the track with a couple of competitors, while Tom & I emptied the contents of our X6 M, torqued lug nuts, and checked fluids, and setup the on-board camera. After Mike’s return we adjusted tire pressures based on the review and assessment of his track walk. This is the routine we’ll repeat at each track we visit for the rest of the week.

After the second time trial at Road America, a new running order was assigned based on finishing positions, which helps to ensure a slower driver delays a fellow competitor. Remember we are racing against the clock, not each other.

We are now running in the fourth group, behind the Porsches, Ferrari’s, ‘Vettes and the like. Our first run was a 5:41.352 minutes; 18 second off the pace of the Mazda. Needless to say we were rather despondent, but then putting this into perspective they had beaten the likes of a Porsche 997 Carrera and a GT3!

After lunch it was time for the second time trail. A similar story to this morning, but we reduced the difference to 15 seconds for a time of 5:39.097 minutes.

Immediately after our run, we were back the road with a 450 mile journey ahead of us to Stillwater, Oklahoma for tomorrow’s One Lap of America event at Hallett Raceway.
