oil leak on my 328i from the oil filter to engine location

Post by 2000_328i »

I have a oil leak where the oil filter unit meets the engine as best i can tell. I have been looking for a DIY for this, but it must be rare. All help appreciated!

Wow, no one else has seen this issue?

I find it hard to believe that 52 people have read this thread and no one has encountered a similar issue. I tore it all apart today and ordered the new gasket. The old one was really brittle (and broke into several pieces upon careful removal). I am confident that this is where the leak was coming from due to all the oil in that area. I will know next week when I put it all back together. With all the parts removed, I was finally able to clean the area so I can see if it does leak anywhere. The removal was rather easy if anyone wants to know.

Best of luck. I'd offer advice if I had experienced the problem myself, but I've not. Hope this is the cure for your troubles!

Cheers,

Well, for those still viewing this thread, my gasket replacement did not fix my oil leak. I should have listened to the BMW tech at the dealer that said in 20 years, that may have happened once or twice.
I will end up taking it in I guess.

You should replace the oil filter o-rings every time you replace the filter. Infact, the filter should always come with new o-rings. I'm not sure how they would go bad if they are changed everytime the filter is changed.

Here is the suggested oil filter for your car.
