Super Bowl XLV event is over and while everyone talks about the Green Bay Packers win or the little mixup in the national anthem by Christina Aguillera, we will focus on the automotive angle of one of the most popular TV events of the year.
By our count, there were exactly 18 car commercials this year with most of them being delivered by Chevy and Hyundai. After a ten year absence, BMW ran two ads at the 2011 Super Bowl. First one was labeled Defying Logic and it showcases the new BMW X3 and the company as a significant contributor to the economy and a vital part of the American automobile manufacturing industry. It was filmed in BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina. Instead of actors, real-life BMW associates and citizens of the local community, including the Spartanburg High School football team, are featured in the commercial.
Volkswagen Darth Vader Commercial
Second one, and our favorite, BMW Advanced Diesel. The ad, set to David Bowie’s iconic melody “Changes,” depicts a truck driver bellowing black smoke, an older-model diesel vehicle sputtering up a hill, and pedestrians surrounded by clouds of filthy exhaust. In the spot, the BMW 3 Series Advanced Diesel makes a grand entrance highlighting its smooth, clean, efficient performance and powers away leaving them all in its dust.
60 millions later and many wonder if the return on investment will be what BMW expected after its 10 year return. Time will tell, but initially rankings and Twitter chatter, give the Advanced Diesel ad thumbs up.
Below we compiled a list of the car ads ran last night during the Super Bowl and we will let you vote on the best car commercial at Super Bowl XLV.
