Rumor: MINI Countryman powered by BMW 2.0 liter diesel engin

Post by bimmermania »

The folks over at BigBlogg snuck near the new MINI Countryman and snapped a shot of what seems to be the BMW 2.0 liter diesel engine powering one of the test mules.

Even though most of the technical details of the Countryman have been made public, BMW has never confirmed if a BMW engine will power the new MINI crossover. In Germany, the MINI Countryman will enter the market with a choice of three gasoline and two diesel engines.

What the photo bellow doesn’t confirm is which 2.0 liter engine we are looking at since BMW offers a wide range of 2.0 liter diesels.

A previous report posted last year, mentioned that a MINI diesel powered vehicle tested at the Oxford plant was the R55 Clubman, paired with the third generation 2.0 liter twin-turbo diesel from the BMW 123d, an engine that outputs 204 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.

Another viable and more environmental friendly would be the detuned version of its 4-cylinder 2.0 liter diesel engine, found in 18d, 20d and 23d iterations, an engine that powers the 316d, offering north of 50MPG.

Unfortunately, these diesel engines will be available for the European market only.

The four-passenger MINI Countryman enters the U.S. market in 2011 with a choice of just two engines: a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that delivers 120 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 118 pound-feet of torque at 4,250 rpm. The model designation is the MINI Cooper Countryman.

The high-end model is the Mini Cooper S Countryman powered by a turbocharged version of 1.6 liter engine that delivers 180 hp at 5,500 rpm and 177 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm for a top speed of 128 mph.

As we move forward towards more economical and gas friendly engines, we expect more BMW powerplants to be found under the hood of MINI models.Image
