Spy Photos: Up-close and personal with 2011 BMW X3

The second and next generation BMW X3 will be launched in 2011, but intensive drive testing continues on the Old Continent. Andreas Krieger, a contributor to our German blog BimmerToday, spotted an F25 prototype somewhere in the Frankfurt Area. Along with the multiple close-up spy shots, Andreas shared some his thoughts of the 2011 X3, as seen in person.

“The roof line looks very sporty, almost coupé-like – no comparison to the current X3! A trailing edge below the rear window emphasizes the sporty lines. The dynamically protruding shoulder line circles the entire vehicle. It begins at the front-end and ends with the trailing edge of the rear window. This creates a sort of ring that  is visually convincing.

The headlights shape is similar to the BMW 5 Series GT (F07). Steering wheel is almost identical to the 7 Series (F01) and the all-new 5 Series (F10). Silver trim elements are available, but little more obvious than in the other models mentioned. The ashtray is in front of the shifter bent upwards (as in the 5-F10) and not straight as in 7 Series 5 GT.

The cockpit is even more driver-oriented than, for example, in the 7 Series. The automatic transmission gear shifter is the same as the in 5 or 7er models.

The kidneys are sitting conspicuously low, just as in the 5 Series. Below the kidneys there is another air opening as seen on the X5. The rear looks very bullish.

Overall, this X3 looks flatter than the current model, but also broader and more dynamic.

The aggressive hood creases are not visible on this prototype, but from what we know, they will be included in the production model. The hood rises sharply just before the windshield and if looked from the side, it looks as if in connects to the glass.

The mirrors slowly reach the size of an elephant’s ears and are clearly increasing in size.

Looking at the prototypes from 20-30 feet away, you think more like the first generation of the BMW X5 (E53) than the current BMW X3 (E83).”

Thanks for the photos Andreas!
