BMW X5 M vs. Grand Cherokee SRT8, Range Rover Sport Supercha

Post by bimmermania »

Car and Driver takes the high-end SUV comparisons to a whole new level. Recently, we have seen the BMW X5 M going tete-a-tete with the Audi Q7 V12 TDI and the Range Rover, but this time around, C&D gives us THE ultimate comparison: the controversial, but impressive BMW X5 M measured against the Grand Cherokee SRT8, Range Rover Sport Supercharged and Cayenne Turbo S.

Same as with the previous comparison, the X5 M takes the crown and its endorsement is even larger when coming from C&D.  But before we jump into their review, let’s have a look at each car’s technical specs:

First Place: BMW X5 M

The first all-wheel-drive BMW made by the Motorsport division, X5 M is powered by 4.4 liter V8 twin-scroll turbo engine that outputs 555 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque from 1,500 rpm. It weighs 5,329 lbs and runs four seconds flat to 60 mph, 100 mph in 10 seconds, and the quarter-mile in 12.5 seconds at 112 mph. Braking performance—162 feet from 70 mph.

Second Place: Porsche Cayenne Turbo S

The top dog in the Cayenne line-up is powered by a direct-injection, 4.8-liter twin-turbo aluminum V8, outputs 550 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque from 2,250 rpm. Runs from 0 to 60  mph in 4.1 seconds, 12.6 at 112 mph in the quarter-mile, 17.8 seconds to 130 mph. Braking performance—158 feet from 70 mph. Weight – 5,305 lbs

Third Place: Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8

SRT8 uses Chrysler’s 6.1-liter pushrod Hemi, a naturally aspirated engine. It has the lowed horsepower out of the four vehicles tested, 420 and 420 lb-ft of torque from 4,800 rpm. Still to 60 mph is reported in 4.4 seconds, 13.2 at 104 mph in the quarter-mile. Braking performance – 176 feet from 70 mph. Weight – 4,768 lbs.

Fourth Place: Rang Rover Sport Supercharged

The engine of choice is the new supercharged and intercooled 5.0-liter, aluminum V8, the same engine used in the Jaguar XFR sedan. Total horsepower? 510. Torque? 461 lb-ft of torque from 2,500 rpm. It reaches 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, 100 mph in 12.4 seconds, 13.7 seconds at 104 mph in the quarter-mile. Braking performance – 174 feet. Weight – 5,840 lbs, the heaviest in the test.
