Video: 2012 BMW Z4 sDrive28i Dyno Test

Post by bimmermania »

Inside Line takes the Turbo-4 equipped 2012 BMW Z4 sDrive28i to the rollers. The Dyno test reveals that the new 2.0 liter TwinPower turbo four-cylinder engine outputs 233 rear wheel horsepower at 5350 rpm and 249 lb-ft at 4450 rpm.

As one of the commentators on the Youtube video mentioned, taking into account drivetrain losses of around 13-15%, this results into the Z4 putting 267.8 – 274.1 horsepower at the flywheel, an impressive number for engine that is conservatively factory-tuned.

With the 2012 BMW Z4 sDrive28i, BMW reintroduces to the market a four-cylinder banger. The all-new 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine, codename N20, will not only power the entry-level Z4, but also the 528i and the new, redesigned 328i. The four-cylinder turbo unit replaces the venerable N52B30 six-cylinder naturally aspirated unit, one of most acclaimed BMW engines in the line-up.

Like the Z4′s last 3.0 liter turbo inline-6, the new 2.0 liter engine combines highpressure direct-injection and BMW’s VALVETRONIC intake control. The turbocharger is a twin-scroll system. The exhaust streams leaving the two pairs of cylinders are kept completely separate as they flow through the exhaust manifold and the turbocharger.

With many ambitious BMW tuners around the world, we expect to see some impressive power numbers coming of the N20 in the near future, especially next year when the new 328i will make use of the 2.0 liter turbo.
