Our friends Kamil over at CarGuyDad just emailed us to inform that along with his friend Mike will be challenging the Cadillac CTS-V in the new marketing campaign initiated by GM: “May The Best Car Win”. Mike will be driving a 2008 BMW M5 and will compete against GM’s former vice-chairman Bob Lutz on October 29th at New York’s Monticello Motor Club.
So far, we have Jalopnik’s Wes Siler who signed up for the challenge along with a Jaguar XFR. The comparisons between the BMW M5, CTS-V and Jaguar XFR have been going on for months, both on track and straightline, but now it’s the time to show the public who is the king.
But this is not it, apparently the challenge was opened to other participants as well and anyone can sign up for it, as long as some conditions are met.
And I put the challenge out to you. If you own a car comparable to the Cadillac CTS-V (a 4-door production stock sport sedan) and you want to match up against me and the Cadillac, you can join us at Monticello. Follow the link hereto fill out an application. From the list of applicants we’ll select several challengers to join us for the V-Series Challenge.
Now let’s take a look at the CarGuyDad’s M5:
2008 BMW M5 with SMG transmission. 13,000 miles, original tires and original brake pads. The Space gray car is pretty much fully loaded (read: heavy) with:
As Kamil points out, GM is clearly in for the win and some things will be at least debatable:
- Full merino leather (dash/doors/panels/rear of seats/everywhere)
- Comfort Access
- Head-Up Display
- 20-way front seats with active width adjustment
- Heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel
- Folding rear seat
- Soft close doors
- Premium sound with iPod control and Sirius
- Rear side airbags
- Three child seats in the back
- Fifteen soccer balls and cones in the trunk (yes, they fit)
Let’s be honest for a second here. GM would not make a challenge such as this opened to everyone if it was not in it to win. It will have cars that will likely be the pick-of-the-litter, with most powerful engines and least amount of optional equipment (less extra weight). These Cadillacs will also probably be equipped with new tires and new brake pads. In addition, I have a feeling, that there may be a few victory-ensuring tricks thrown in, such as some high-temperature-rated brake fluid, better brake pads, etc. No one will really know.
But we’ll keep an eye on this challenge and we’re confident Kamil and his friend will make us proud, by us we mean the BMW fans. In the end, we all know M5 is still the King.
