More Speed Restrictions Coming To Autobahn?

Post by bimmermania »

One of the biggest joys of being in Germany is to enjoy the almost always speedless autobahn. Any car enthusiast dreams to take their own BMW on the Autobahn and push its limits. But in the past years, German government has imposed more and more regulations on the freeway and nowadays, there are plenty of speed-limited zones around the major cities.

A recent report by Bloomberg confirms that worse times are ahead of us. The Green party won a regional election last month in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg and one item on their platform thast stands out is a plant to set a 120 km/h (75mph) speed limited on the autobahn in Baden-Wuerttember, less than half the top speed of a recent Porsche model.

About 65 percent of the state’s highways currently have no speed limit.

The initiative has nothing to do with road safety, but rather with ….as expected, the green movement. Bloomberg quotes party leader Winfried Kretschmann, the future premier of the state, as saying that vehicle traffic contributes to 30 percent of Baden-Wuettemberg’s CO2 emissions.  A high number in his opinion.

Interesting enough, both Porsche and Mercedes-Benz have their headquarters established in this state and both companies are known for their sporty, fast cars.

Will our European Deliveries become less fun? We certainly hope not since this has been the main driver for us to come to Europe to pickup our lovely bimmers.
