So who wants to update their Twitter or Facebook while driving? Well, if you’re a Social Media junky like myself, everyone does!
My wife is always yelling at me to stop checking my Twitter and Facebook accounts while I’m at a red light or in stop-and-go traffic. I can’t help it. Like most people hooked on Social Media nowadays, these tools are my main source of info, news and updates.
Now I can do it in my BMW.
Using the recently released BMW Apps, a $250 factory option, along with the free iOS application “Connected Drive”, I can now integrate my Twitter feed and Facebook updates with the iDrive. Great, another source of distraction for drivers.
Well, it’s not what you’re thinking.
You can’t choose a random update. The application let’s you choose from a pre-programmed list of updates, such as weather conditions, what you’re listening to, or simply where you’re heading. Why is this important? Doesn’t everyone want to know what I’m listening to? Afterall, I’m a very important guy. Just kidding! But if you understand Social Media, you will understand the importance of these latest integrations into your car, and BMW is not the only one doing this.
Let’s not kid ourselves, everyday many people zoom down the interstates amidst fellow commuters while texting, reading emails, even watching Youtube on their iPhones and tablets, and I certainly do not condone any of these behaviors. We know it is happening because unfortunately death by texting is rapidly becoming a leading motor vehicle accident statistic. BMW understands these sad statistics, and with safety in mind, they are working on integrating more of our daily routines into the vehicles we spend lots of time in.
I for one, am grateful.
