At the MINI United event in May, the company will unveil the new MINI Cooper S Works GP. Dr. Kay Segler, the senior vice president of the MINI brand, said the vehicle will debut at the Circuit Paul Ricard F1 track in Le Castellet, France.
Not much is known about the GP II, but insiders close to the brand say that the car will feature a high performance turbocharged engine with power around 200 horsepower.
The power unit is based on 1.6 liter found in the John Cooper Works cars. The same unit is also used in the sporty Peugeot and Citroen model that produce 256 horsepower.
For Autoblog, Segler said he’s personally driven the machine, and that is a full 20 seconds faster around the road course than its predecessor.
It remains unknown if the GP will be a two-seater, but it will use an aggressive bodykit with sportier suspensions and a lower ride height.
The original GP was limited to 2,000 units. At the time, in the UK, the GP cost £22,000, therefore a £25,000 price point is expected.
