Rumor: Next generation BMW X1 to go front-wheel drive

das

The rumor of a future BMW X1 with front-wheel drive surfaced back in June, but it returns today with a new iteration from the usual insider Scott27. In a post on the Germancarforum discussion board, the BMW source talks about the design language of the next generation X1 and how it will be taking advantage of the UKL platform.

Here is the post in its entirely, with small grammar changes.

Design of the new BMW X1

“Design response? Very evolutionary appearance, retains the X1 surface treatment that defines the character lines but in keeping more with the new design language by adding more dimension. As before it looks very sport orientated with a solid stance and dynamic in appearance.

BMW X5 rendering

The overall outline is something similar to this X5 render with the front end design (minus M packet here) not being too far off.

It is slightly bigger which will be reflected inside but this model had no interior as it was the styling model. But still remains as BMW’s compact SAV which will sit above the sub-compact BMW F.A.S.T. The entry SAV/MPV/Touring/Coupe/Crossover and connect to the rest of the BMW X-line.

The big change to the X1 is of course the move to the UKL platform meaning that entry X1 models will be FWD with larger engined models retaining AWD. But given BMW’s determination to focus on making FWD BMWs the most agile FWD cars in its class, this should be reflected in the final product.

The interesting addition is the inclusion of a BMW X2. Forgoing the typical SAC appearance of the X6 and forthcoming X4 models because as the concept gets smaller, proportions and especially headroom gets tighter in the rear.
Think of the X2 as the MINI Paceman is to the MINI Countryman and is a lower roofed SAV with a shallow glasshouse and dynamic angled roofline. The X2 is exclusively the first 3dr BMW SAV/SAC model.

The move to determine more prestige , space and sportier appearance is to keep the next generation X1 retain its current status as Europes no 1 best selling Sport Activity Vehicle in light of advancing competitors to the segment.”

Yet Another Rumor: Next BMW X1 to go front-drive

das

BMW X1 has been a smashing hit for the Munich-based automaker. The rear-wheel drive and xDrive models sold to 300,000 customers around the world since its market launch in Fall 2009. The X1 was praised by magazines and rewarded for its agile handling, fuel efficiency and extraordinary versatility.

But the next generation X1 might go through a dramatic change. According to Autocar UK, the second generation of the premium compact SAV will go on sale in 2015 and will trade the rear-wheel-drive platform with the new front-drive architecture to be shared with future MINIs and the upcoming 1 Series GT which will launch at the Paris Auto Show.

Insiders told Autocar that the decision to drop the iconic rear-wheel drive platform is directly related to BMW’s goals to lower production costs, while offering added packaging benefits. The second generation X1 might offer an upgraded interior and gadgetry thanks to new space-saving that will results from the mounting of the engine.

To further reduce production costs, the X1 will share many of its key elements with the second-generation MINI Countryman. The two models will be part of the new compact car family called UKL.

First lineup to be based on the new UKL architecture is the next generation MINI. Dubbed F56, similar to the nomenclature used by BMW vehicles, the third-generation MINI will come to market in 2013.  This product family aims to offer similar technical options for different body types.

There is also still hope for customers looking for an xDrive X1 model. The front-wheel drive architecture will be combined with Haldex style multi-plate clutch to provide a four-wheel drive capability.

Under the hood, the X1 family will make exclusive use of four-cylinder engine since BMW has already confirmed that it has no plans to re-engineer its six-cylinder engine for transverse mounting.
